Building an extension for my mother-in-law

I love my mother-in-law but I never planned on living with her permanently. I have been enjoying her living with us now that we have kids but I feel like we all need some extra space so I am getting a granny flat built at the back of our block. This should allow us to have some extra space to make sure everyone has the privacy that they need whilst we can still be a family. This block has some tip on the process of building a granny flat including how to choose a contractor and how to get the council approval for the build.

Different Specialties in Urban Planning Profession for International Students

by Chloe Cooper

Are you an international student seeking to study urban planning but are not sure what field to specialize? You are not alone. Many international students are often in the dark regarding the array of fields under the urban planning profession. It is important to note that there is more to urban planning than just managing infrastructure and services. This article, therefore, provides information on the different fields an international student undertaking urban planning in Australia can specialize.

Heritage and Conservation -- As a planner in this field, one is required to conserve and protect historic buildings and sites across Australia. In 1970, the government of Australia, together with politicians and the community, realized the value of heritage of Australian buildings and therefore placed laws, regulations and policies to protect these structures. An international student wishing to specialize in this area should be conversant with the Green Ban. It is an important aspect in formulation of heritage and conservation policies.

Transport Planning -- Another area one can specialize in as an urban planner is transport planning. Experts in this field are mandated with identifying and planning for accessibility needs of people and freight. Transportation planners also offer advisory services to the government as well as local traffic management department. A successful transport planner considers the social, environmental and economic needs of a community and comes up with planning tactics in the context of urban planning.

Environmental Planning and Natural Resources Management -- This is another urban planning segment that an international student can specialize in. Environmental planning and natural resources management involves the facilitation of decision making with the aim of carrying out land development. This requires an urban planner to consider the natural environment as well as sociopolitical, economic and governance aspects of a location for positive outcome. In this niche, a professional's main objective is to create sustainable communities, which strive to conserve and protect natural resources such as underdeveloped land, air, flora, fauna and water.

Development Assessment and Land Use -- In development assessment and land use, international students have the opportunity to join a fast growing profession in the town planning industry. Experts in this field typically focus on auditing development proposals using a consistent process as well as stipulated assessment and decision standards. Development assessment experts are critical as they advise the council on the type of developments that should be carried out on specific pieces of land.
