Building an extension for my mother-in-law

I love my mother-in-law but I never planned on living with her permanently. I have been enjoying her living with us now that we have kids but I feel like we all need some extra space so I am getting a granny flat built at the back of our block. This should allow us to have some extra space to make sure everyone has the privacy that they need whilst we can still be a family. This block has some tip on the process of building a granny flat including how to choose a contractor and how to get the council approval for the build.

Get More Out of Your Roof With Timber Trusses

by Chloe Cooper

Are you planning to build a new property or are you re-roofing an existing home? How much thought have you given to the roof of your building? It can be tempting to think of the roof as simply something to keep the rain out. If you have been thinking in that way, it's time to stop. Getting your roof right allows you to get so much more out of your property and to maximise every aspect of the building and not just the floor space.

The perfect roof allows the perfect internal design

By thinking carefully about the most appropriate roof design for your building, you can come up with a solution that is flexible enough to take into account household systems such as air conditioning units, hot water systems and even skylights while still offering an attractive appearance. Today, the most effective way of creating a roof like this is to use prefabricated roof trusses. Timber trusses are the framework that support the roof and cover the open space above the rooms of your home. Trusses will let you work with coffered ceilings, box gutters, and raked ceilings. Trusses are a great practical benefit when it comes to home design. When you employ roof trusses to construct your roof, you have a low-cost method of covering distances in excess of 15 metres without the need to install internal supports. Using a single truss to span such a long distance permits great flexibility in internal design and the creation of large open-plan areas within your dwelling.

Fast to install

When you are having work undertaken on any roof, it is always a priority to get the work completed as quickly as possible so that the property can be covered and protected. Prefabricated roof trusses are delivered to your work site ready for installation. You don't have to waste time ensuring that each truss is cut and shaped for the ideal fit. Everything is pre-prepared and arrives ready to be placed in the correct location in the building. This approach makes prefabricated roof trusses the ideal solution when you need to get the job done without delay. If you want your new roof to offer the maximum amount of design flexibility and to be fitted quickly, then select a roof that uses prefabricated roof trusses. Your local truss supplier will be able to guide you in the selection of the correct timber trusses for your project.
