Building an extension for my mother-in-law

I love my mother-in-law but I never planned on living with her permanently. I have been enjoying her living with us now that we have kids but I feel like we all need some extra space so I am getting a granny flat built at the back of our block. This should allow us to have some extra space to make sure everyone has the privacy that they need whilst we can still be a family. This block has some tip on the process of building a granny flat including how to choose a contractor and how to get the council approval for the build.

4 Benefits a Bathroom Skylight Will Introduce to Your Home

by Chloe Cooper

A bathroom skylight may seem like an unusual addition to your home, but it's sure to improve your space in more ways than one. Alongside bringing more natural light into a dim bathroom, here are four benefits a skylight window can bring.

1. Skylights bring down your bills

If you're like most Australian families, you're probably always looking for ways to bring down the cost of your electricity bill. When installed correctly, a skylight can do just that. Opening up your skylight window in the summer will help ventilate a stuffy bathroom, reducing your need for air conditioning and allowing you to switch off that extractor fan. In the winter, on the other hand, sunlight streaming through a closed window can actually heat up your bathroom space. Plus, you'll save on the cost of lighting too. With a skylight bringing in tons more natural light into your bathroom, you may never need to turn on artificial lights again during the daytime.

2. Skylights reduce your risk of mould and mildew

As you may already know, a dark, damp atmosphere is the perfect breeding ground for mould and mildew. That's why bathrooms, which often lack large windows and get very wet after showers and baths, are often filled with these contaminants. Skylights can help reduce mould and mildew by bringing in natural light since UV light from the sun kills mould spores. Plus, increased ventilation helps water evaporate before mould takes hold.

3. Skylights make bathrooms more comfortable

Even if you don't have a problem with mould and you're not worried about the costs of running an extractor fan, humid and stuffy bathrooms are still uncomfortable. Your bathroom should be a place you can relax and unwind, but it's hard to do that when you're struggling to breathe clammy air. Bringing in fresh air with a skylight is sure to make your bathroom the comfortable oasis it should be.

4. Skylights make your bathroom attractive

Skylights make your bathroom feel more modern and even more eye-catching. Not only does sunlight brighten your decor, being able to see the sky and surrounding environment will give your bathroom a fresh feel. Whether you're hoping to increase your home value or you just want a nicer looking bathroom space, this increased visual appeal can be a big help.

5. Skylights offer more privacy than windows

Skylights are a great choice for bathrooms because they offer more privacy than wall windows. No one wants nosy neighbours or passersby watching them in the shower or on the toilet, after all. Skylights bring all the benefits of a window while ensuring no one can look inside.
